Classic Style Reimagined for Modern Shades

Whether it is their timeless style or unmatched performance, classic window treatments have stood the test of time because they are good at what they do. For centuries, plantation-style shutters and Roman shades have been used in homes for light control, privacy, and their streamlined aesthetic. Now, Abbey Carper of Maui partnered with Hunter Douglas highlights its newest textile artists who are taking a modern twist on classic treatments and traditional style with new materials, new designs, and new ways of incorporating classic aesthetics into modern shades.

Classic Window Treatments

Update classic window treatments into modern shades with high class style and high-end craftsmanship using modern materials like ultra-durable wood composites and designer textiles.

Plantation-Style Shutters

This window treatment dates much farther back than the American South. Plantation shutters actually originated in 1500s Greece. The treatment has been made from multiple materials over the years, though classic American styles were primarily made of wood. Throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, wood shutters were a sophisticated treatment for high-end homes, recalling refined tastes and the latest in design style. Modern hardwood shutters are still a preferred treatment for many discerning homebuyers, though modern iterations come in a variety of enhanced materials. NewStyle® Hybrid Shutters are made from a wood composite that has been co-extruded with a polypropylene coating resulting in ultra-durable treatments. And though made of enhanced materials, the classic look of genuine hardwood is maintained with the Finetech® and UltraGrain™ finishes.

Roman Shades

Roman shades aren’t a modern Italian invention. In fact, these window dressings date back to Ancient Rome. The original Roman shades hung over the Colosseum as a sort of awning system, and for hundreds of years this style of folding fabric shade has remained a popular choice for protective yet fashionable light control. Modern Roman shades come with the latest operating motorized systems as well as contemporary textiles for modern shades for the strength, longevity, and styles of today. Design Studio™ Roman Shades come with a choice of operating systems including PowerView® Automation, Hunter Douglas’s state-of-the-art motorized system. Design Studio™ Roman Shades are also available in the latest advanced materials and designer fabrics including prints by Rebecca Atwood, Seema Krish, and Marcie Bronkar.

Historical Prints

In fabric treatments modernization comes not from the new but from the newly imagined classics. Artists like Rebecca Atwood and Marcie Bronkar draw on historical prints and patterns for inspiration in their latest designer lines for the Design Studio™ Collection.

Designer Rebecca Atwood

A modern textile artist out of New York, Rebecca Atwood is well known for her organic printmaking expertise that includes both hand-stamping and watercolor techniques. When applied to classic designs, Atwood’s skillful applications create modern versions of classic patterns with softened aesthetics and a fresh feel. Ornament by Atwood is one example of traditional pattern-work in the collection with a modern, linear interpretation of the damask pattern.

Designer Marcie Bronkar

Strong pattern-work defines the Bronkar fabric collection for Design Studio products with textiles inspired by historical design such as period artwork. Menagerie, for example, by Bronkar is styled after a classic English Jacobean pattern reimagined in a “toile de Jouy” style. Bronkar’s sophisticated renderings of classic patterns and pieces make modern shades that feel timeless and work as design focal points or as strong background elements in a room.
